Event description: Possible Futures
Kids, get your thinking caps on and join us as we explore big questions about the future!

For kids who always ask ‘why?’ and never settle for ‘just because’… these small-group ‘thinking’ workshops will get kids pondering big questions that face humanity in the 21st century and beyond.

Each workshop presents intriguing stories, custom-made films, dramatic role-plays, thought experiments and inventions. Children are encouraged to respond by expressing themselves verbally and artistically, exploring new perspectives, developing reasoned arguments and challenging each other respectfully.

Our age-specific workshops are led by professional facilitators of The Philosophy Club, experienced in helping children think collaboratively, engage with big questions and explore stimulating ideas.

We are offering two age-specific workshops, as described below:

For 8 – 9 year olds: To boldly go where no child has gone before!
Space travel, interplanetary colonisation and extra-terrestrial intelligence are our springboards for exploring ethics… in the far distant future.

We experience an astronaut’s launch into space with a dramatic simulation of lift-off, followed by a philosophical enquiry into why we might want to explore space. We explore real-life space capsules designed to reach out to extra-terrestrial civilisations, and we even design and launch a space capsule of our own!

For 10 – 12 year olds: When things start to think…
What does it mean to have a mind? Who or what has a mind? Does Wall-E think? What about a smartphone? A thermostat?

Videos from cutting-edge robotics laboratories provide stimuli for an enquiry about artificial intelligence. How we can know whether a machine is really thinking or feeling? How we can know whether the person sitting beside you is really thinking or feeling?
